LEADERSHIP TRAIT - INITIATIVE Initiative is the ability to comprehend a situation (crises, challenge) and initiate or direct a course of action even in the absence of orders. It is the direct product of self - confidence and will power. The development of this quality is essential not for a leader but in all grades and must be fostered among all team / subordinates. Team members unite quickly behind a leader who meets a new and unexpected situation with prompt action / response. Initiative can be developed only through constant practice. Closely allied with and in broader sense really a part of initiative , is resourcefulness i.e. the ability to deal with a situation (crises, challenge) in the absence of normal methods and means. New situation (crises, challenge) and absence of means due to contestant / competitors or any other cause / limitation demands resourcefulness in a leader. Training (Skill, Knowledge and Experience) and availability of required resources / systems are designed to meet all normal expected situations but sometimes fail. Inactivity or passive acceptance of an unsatisfactory situation because of lack of resources is never justified and calls for resourcefulness and ingenuity on the part of the leader. To Develop Initiative a Leader must: 1. Stay physically and mentally fit and alert at all times 2. Train himself to recognize the necessity of doing / accomplishing a job / task and do it without guidance / advise from team members or stakeholders and without hesitation 3. Learn to anticipate likely contingencies and situations in advance and have contingencies plans ready to handle them 4. Accept responsibility readily and train himself to utilize all available resources in most effective manner in accomplishment of mission 5. Always encourage the exercise of initiative by the team members / staff by assigning them tasks commensurate with their responsibility. maximum latitude to accomplish such assignments and then analyses their action / response objectively and provide them necessary advice and guidance.
