LEADS UNITED SACKS BOSS McDARMOT Leeds United sacked manager Brian McDermott on Friday, according to several reports in the British media. McDermotts departure is believed to be linked to Italian Massimo Cellinos on-going attempt to buy the Championship club. Cellino, the owner of Serie A side Cagliari, has had a delegation in Leeds for the last week as he prepares to sign off a 75 per cent purchase of Leeds from current owners Gulf Finance House. One of his takeover group is reported to the former Middlesbrough defender Gianluca Festa and it is understood that on Tuesday it was asked if Festa could sit in the dugout with McDermott during Leeds 1-1 draw with Ipswich. It is thought Cagliari-born Festa, 44, is Cellinos first choice to replace McDermott. Leeds won 15 of their 36 matches under McDermott, but failed to win any of their last eight games and lie 12th in the table – eight points from a playoff spot. That dismal run included a 6-0 defeat at local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, as well as an FA Cup exit against League Two minnows Rochdale. McDermott, who joined Leeds in April last year, gave a news conference on Friday during which he admitted that Saturdays game against Huddersfield could be his last before saying he intended to enjoy the occasion. Leeds captain Ross McCormack confirmed McDermotts departure and admitted he was shocked by the decision. The club have decided to sack him unfortunately. Hes gone, he called me up earlier and he told me hed gone, McCormack told Sky Sports News. Its hard times at the club. Im absolutely gutted because I had a really close relationship with the manager. I was looking forward to continuing to work with Leeds United under Brian McDermott but things have changed. I think a big part of that was Brian McDermott and at the moment its still very raw.
