LETTER FROM A FORMER DECLAWER - PLEASE SHARE: (sent to Dr. Jennifer Conrad, Paw Project founder and director) Hi Jennifer, Just got finished watching The Paw Project. ...Wow! A standing ovation to you!! Im very proud of you. Sad to say that I was one of the declawers in my early days. I dont mean to make excuses, but it was the norm in the olden days. I did it for the owners and not for the cats. To be honest with you, I never felt comfortable doing this procedure. Ive even done it on a mountain lion and serval (back in the days when I was doing exotics). I cant believe I didnt make up my own mind to stop doing the declaws. (A client of Dr. Conrad) was really the one that started opening my eyes some more. Thanks to her, I made the decision long ago not to do any more declaws. In the beginning, clients were upset with me for not doing them. In fact, I did lose a few clients by not doing the declaws but in the long run, I have a clean conscience. I didnt lose much with those clients who wanted declawed cats. I just hated doing that surgery. I hated what the cats went through afterward. Even if I had very minimal complication, I hated doing it... Ive seen so many botched up declaws from other practices that it forced me to re-do them. Because of what you did, I dont see (botched declaws) much anymore. I see maybe a handful here and there but theyre aging cats that were done long ago. Thank you again for your tiresome work. You need to take a long deserved vacation!! My hats off to you.
