LETTER FROM MR CHIS HAYES OFFICE RELEASE OF DO THI MINH - TopicsExpress

LETTER FROM MR CHIS HAYES OFFICE RELEASE OF DO THI MINH HANH Dear Friends, It seems that our efforts in the area of raising human rights violations committed by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has not gone unnoticed, as I have been informed that Ms Do Thi Minh Hanh has been released from prison last Friday. While no reason was given for Ms Do’s early release, it would appear reasonable to assure that this arose as a consequence of sustained and considerable international attention to her case. These actions by the Vietnamese Government are welcomed; however, we must not mistake this for general improvement in Vietnam’s approach to human rights, as trade pressures are likely to have played some role in this outcome. Whilst Ms Do has been freed, we must not forget about her two colleagues, Mr Doan Huy Chuong and Mr Nguyen Hoang Quoc Hung, who remain in prison over the very same issue, i.e. Standing up for the rights of workers at the My Phong Shoe factory. We will continue to focus on them, and the many others who have been unjustly imprisoned for exercising their basic human rights. Chris Hayes MP
