LETTER RE AP STORY: Czech President Zeman awards Sir Nicholoas Winton with highest state honor for helping to save children from Nazi death camps. Ambassador Martin Pohl Embassy of the Czech Republic Canberra, Australia Your Excellency I applaud the Czech Republics awarding of the Order of the White Lion to Sir Nicholas Winton who organised the escape of 669 children from Nazi Germany. Efforts to save the lives of children are always highly commendable. Thus, it is a source of great shame that Presidents Klaus and Zeman did not, in the spirit and example of Sir Nicholas Winton, energetically undertake every means possible to save the lives of over 900 innocent Palestinian children who died under the monstrous assaults of Israeli war crimes during Operations Cast Lead, Pillar of Cloud and Protective Edge. Shamefully, Klaus and Zeman leapt obediently to support Israels right to defend itself in the aforementioned operations that were initiated by Israel and motivated by securing profits for their military industries that guarantee clients, like the Czech Republic, that Israeli armaments are tested in war. Klaus and Zeman utterly lack the concern for the wellbeing of Palestinian children, unlike former President Havel who, in the first week of Operation Cast Lead, in a joint statement with Desmond Tutu, Hans Kung and others, urged immediate nonviolent efforts to end the assault. Then, of course, there is the international shame of the Czech Republic voting against the Palestinian bid in 2012 to join the UN as an observer state. Sadly, the granting of the award is therefore tainted by the hypocrisy of the Czech government that places economic and political pragmatism over the lives of the children of Palestine.... reminiscent of the attitude of Chamberlain in 1938. I hope that the Czech government will quickly come to its moral senses, and follow the fine example of EU member Sweden, which, on 30 October, officially recognised the state of Palestine in an effort to bring peace to Palestine and Israel.
