LET’S ACCEPT CRITICISM AND GROW “I often get sad and regret a lot when I look at my handwriting as I was told to improve it by my teachers during my schooling days. But I would feel and say inside myself even the teacher do not have good handwriting and asking me to improve it. I did not listen or gave hint to such criticism. If I have taken in this criticism very positively today I would have become a calligrapher…” This is one set of examples from many we Bhutanese have. Shame, down look, anger, agony etc… is the synonym of Criticism which keeps Bhutan very backward. When we break the ice of being able to receive criticism I guarantee and assure that we too will become America and England. We the Bhutanese people always want us to be praised, say good things about oneself, and always respect as a boss which is not a reality. Reality is that we all do mistakes and mistakes need to be corrected and these mistakes can be only corrected by others to grow as an intellectual. Criticism may come in two forms that are negative and positive but both do the same thing that is growth not just physically but professionally, intellectually, morally, socially and emotionally. Thus, it is important for us to take in positive ways no matter in which form it comes. If we take criticism from the positive outlook it helps us to grow in the very competitive world because only other knows about us. We will always feel ourselves as a great individual and would not find any fault within ourselves hence it is the other who actually knows about our mistakes and areas where we can improve therefore when other says or points out our mistakes and area where we need to improve it comes in the form of criticism. Web defines criticism as “Disapproval expressed by pointing out faults or shortcomings” but I called it as climbing steps towards success as it gives an opportunity to see all the obstacles that one can encounter to become a successful person but unfortunately this obstacle cannot be seen by oneself. The person who gives criticism is known as critique and there are many types of critique. Unluckily we do not have any critiques in Bhutan and even we have few they do their work anonymously because we Bhutanese are very reluctant to accept one’s fault. But in the developed countries criticism have become part of their daily chores therefore they openly accepts it and as a result they become a successful individuals. Thus these countries are known as developed and more civilized but not the Bhutanese. Everybody whatever they do may be movie making, writing, singing songs, giving speech and etc… the critique will give criticism and these individuals will also accept it because the result of criticism is always growth and success. Though we have the eyes to see others fault but we never dare to see our faults therefore to cure and care of our faults we need somebody to point it out. It is high time that we Bhutanese built a space within us to accept criticism and grow. Today comparing to other western and develop countries I feel like we have low profile in writing, speaking, making movies and songs, reading, building positive attitudes etc… and this is not that we bhutanese are very bad in this works. Indeed the English speaking countries accepts Bhutan to be the most fluently speaking English nation in the world. Still than why are we backward and still striving within oneself and the very answer is simple and that is we do not accept criticism. We Bhutanese are by birth and nature very egoistic and we hardly accepts our mistakes and areas where we need improvement. Moreover person who sees areas for improvement in other persons work also does not provide criticism feeling that the other would get angry or hurt. We the Bhutanese usually gets hurt or feel like I am better than him (ego) if one gives criticism. For e.g. if I give an criticism to my friend than he would feel like who is he to give me criticism and might get angry or hurt inside or sometimes he might say are you jealous of my work or what or might say please if you are not happy do this work yourself. This is the kind of society where we live. I would give in writing that if we Bhutanese do not change this attitude than we can forget about getting success and growin g. We cannot change this habit of not accepting criticism in the person who was born in past and who are getting older and working individuals as their brain will not accept the transformation. But you our younger generation can definitely do it and by 10- 15 years we will have individuals who is open and welcomes growth and success along with the criticism. Yes we may take time but if we start transforming our society from just now itself we can definitely achieve it within the short bound of time. I pledge to all the younger generation of today to inculcate the sense of mind which is broader, open and accepts criticism. Let there be thousands of critique in Bhutan which would help in growth of every individuals and nation in particular. May the rays of peace shine on the people of Paledn Drukpa and may Glorious Drukpa’s rays flourish bringing peace, happiness and prosperity. Yonten Norbu (Teacher) A brief look into the School’S hiStory The Year 1987 was a matter of pride for the Sengdhyen community when “Sengten Doya Community School” as earlier known was established for the benefit of the Lhop community in the most remote part of the country. The school was officially innaguarated by the Dorokha Drungpa, Dasho Damcho Lhundup in the presence of Samtse Dzongrab, Gup, Tshogpas, other guests and the parents. It was opened with just one section of PP with approximately 150 students and Mr. S.S. Dey from West Bengal as the first Principal. There was no boarding facility back then but WFP provided stipend for one meal (lunch). The diet was supplemented with oil and flour distributed by the Dorokha BHU who made monthly visits for health checkup and treatment. The school had just a beautifully designed two storied Bhutanese styled traditional academic block with four units of classrooms each. As additional facility small football ground exists before the construction of the school on the spot. From 1988, with Mr. Tshering Tobgay as the new Principal, the school saw changes like the introduction of gho and kira as the school uniform, construction kitchen cum dining hall and the up gradation from Classes I to III. The late 1990s saw the school with a new Principal’s quarter (1998) and the booming cardamom cultivation and also other new agriculture activities. At present, cardamom cultivation and other productions are not practical because of bugs and other diseases. With the advent of the new millennium, the school saw development and new events happening. With the opening of Tarayana Foundation, the school takes in beneficiaries every year. At present, there are 102 Gyelpoi Tozey students in various classes supported by the royal Kidu. As the number of students enrolled increased, many projects of construction are in progress to accommodate all. The year 2006 saw the completion of a new academic block and a block of boys’ hostel of three units each. Under the dynamic leadership of former Principal Mr. Pema Dorji (2006-2011), this school had witnessed wider range of changes such as the construction of Kitchen attached with dining hall; additional academic block with six units, boys’ hostel and girls’ toilet, staff quarter beside the other maintenance work in the school, with the arrival of motor able road within the school campus in 2011. More over with minister’s view of “GREEN SCHOOL, GREEN BHUTAN” school greatly emphasis on the ground of beautifying the school campus with “Natural Green”. It is realized with planting of 800 plus saplings within the consecutive years 2010 and 2011, which turned merely pasture land for the local people to shelters, protection to various sentient being and conducive learning environment to our learners. It acted as the first aids for the academic Excellence. The school has the belief that the wholesome education is must to bring out best in each child. The school also believes that the quality of relationship amongst teachers and parents is crucial to its success in many areas. Hence; the school also promotes the community participation by celebrating the special occasions jointly and asks help in admission too. The SMB members are given power to exercise the school development plans. With the arrival of new Principal, Mr. Singye to the School in 2012, School went into tremendous transformation be it academically or infrastructure. With his advent school saw further development like electricity which minimized the daily work of the school thus being able to give more time to academic and co-curricular activities. Though very far but school today enjoys every facilities like schools in the urban area be it computer, internet, mobile, printers, digital printers etc… which helped in reducing the workload. Under the farsighted leadership of present Principal school yet saw two more buildings coming in to ease the increasing student’s enrollment problem.
