LEVERAGING OUR VOTES LEADING THE VANGUARD UCubed changed its cover photo today. The White House north portico and President John F. Kennedys quote sets the stage for the next two years. The north portico is where the president and president-elect depart from to attend the Inauguration. Its where two elected leaders show the world that a peaceful transition of power is possible. For UCubed, the 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue entrance serves a more prosaic purpose. It reminds us of an inescapable fact: The White House is the last point of leverage jobless households have. Every other institution of government – the Supreme Court, the Senate and the House of Representatives – is a wholly owned subsidiary of the dark money that corrupts our system of government. Chief Justice John Roberts, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker John Boehner couldn’t give a damn about the unemployed and underemployed. But JFK did. In the 1961 recession, he increased the minimum wage, expanded unemployment benefits, improved Social Security benefits so workers could retire earlier and invested heavily in highway construction and urban renewal. His investment tax cuts, however, were left Lyndon Baines Johnson to push through a reluctant Congress. “Give me a place to stand,” President Kennedy once said, “and I shall move the world.” He knew a lever was a force multiplier. He had used it to negotiate a limited nuclear test ban treaty, combat racial discrimination and create the Peace Corps. But he instinctively knew that more must be done. So does UCubed. Between now and Inauguration Day 2017, we will remind American voters what Democratic presidents have done in their name. We also will point out where more must be done by President Barack Obama and his possible Democratic successors. We will leverage our votes every chance we get. We will lead the vanguard in the battleground states. And, in doing so, we expect to make the drive from the north portico of the White House to east front of the Capitol a democratic triumph.
