LG releases books ‘Dweep Sanjivini’ & ‘The Jarawas of the Andamans’ PORT BLAIR, NOV 5/-/ The Lt Governor, Lt Gen A K Singh (Retd), today released two books, titled ‘Dweep Sanjivini’ authored by Dr. Manju Nair, Associate Professor, JNRM and ‘The Jarawas of the Andamans’ written by Dr. Ratan Chandra Kar at a simple function at Raj Niwas. The First Lady of the Islands, Smt Suneeti Singh, Member of Parliament, Shri B.P. Ray, Smt Rupa Ray and officiating Chief Secretary, Smt Rina Ray, senior officers of the Administration and Lecturers from JNRM were also present. ‘Dweep Sanjivini’ is a collection of stories in Hindi relating to the history, people, tribal, animals and marine life of A&N Islands. The book is divided into three sections. The first section, ‘Coral’, contains stories relating with the origin while the second section, ‘Virasat’, contains stories about the history of the Islands. The third section, ‘Jharokha’, contains narration on the devastating tsunami and life in the Islands thereafter. Besides, the book also contains references about the important festivals of different States that are celebrated in the Islands. The book ‘The Jarawas of the Andamans’ contains the Author’s observations and recorded health practices of the Jarawa tribe of the Islands. The author has penned down many ethno-medical treatments practised among the Jarawa tribe. He has recorded not only about the common ailments but also about the outbreak of epidemic like measles and malaria among the Jarawa in the past. Addressing all those present on the occasion, the Lt Governor complimented the author of the book ‘Dweep Sanjivini’ for bringing out the book about the Islands. He observed that the book, which covers various aspects of the Islands, will encourage more Islanders to write about the Islands. He had special words of appreciation for the deep understanding of Hindi language by the author and for speaking fluent Hindi despite hailing from a non-Hindi speaking State. Speaking about the book ‘The Jarawas of the Andamans’, the Lt Governor complimented the author for his exceptional work of providing medical care to the Jarawa tribe for more than a decade. He said that the Administration and the people of the Islands are conscious about the welfare of the primitive tribals of the Islands and all possible measures are being taken for the welfare and protection of the tribal population. The primitive tribals are the original inhabitants of the Islands and cannot be forgotten at any cost. Therefore, immediately after taking office, “I laid down a vision of all-round comprehensive development of the Islands while keeping the ecological concerns and the tribal issues to the fore”. No act of the Administration would be in a manner that will be prejudicial to the interest of our tribes, he said. He further said to deal with issues of our tribes, advice is taken from experts and the best anthropologists. Since the Administration is directly responsible and accountable for the welfare of the tribals, we have to harmonize the advice of the experts with our responsibility to ensure that the interests of our tribes are protected in the best possible manner. He said that there are two opinions on the Jarawa tribes-first, those who do not want that Jarawa tribes be disturbed. The second opinion believes that the fruits of development should also reach out to the Jarawas. The major question is who is to decide what is good for the tribals. It is in this context, we have taken a view that the best way to proceed forward is to ascertain the views of the Jarawa through the specialists and the well trained staff of AAJVS, who can talk to them and understand what is good and bad for them and slowly and surely, the Administration is proceeding in that direction for which hotspots have been created. Referring to the recent incident of some French tourist venturing into the Jarawa area and making documentary on the Jarawa, the Lt Governor said that the act of the foreigners is total illegal and action has been initiated for breach of law in this regard. The Administration will leave no stone unturned to see that those who have breached the law are brought to book. The Police Force, Forest, AAJVAS/Tribal Welfare, Coast Guard and Indian Navy should work in a coordinated manner to ensure the security of these areas. The Lt Governor recalled that the Administration had formulated a protocol in consultation with experts for the circum navigation of North Sentinel Island, where the indigenous tribal Sentinelese are living. This will ensure proper monitoring of the area for the well being of the tribe. He appreciated the Coast Guard for having recently apprehended some foreign poachers near the Island. Further, a conference on the theme-Thinking Futures: The PVTGS of the A&N Islands is being held in the first week of December 2014. The experts and researchers of repute will deliberate on the measures to be taken for the welfare of tribal groups of the A&N Islands. The Administration will take action on the basis of suggestions that would emerge through such transparent deliberation, he said. Shri Jadesh Narayan Rai, Secretary, HSKP and Dr. Anjani Srivastava, Lecturer, JNRM also gave brief introduction about the book ‘Dweep Sanjivini’. Earlier, the authors of both the books Smt Manju Nair & Shri Ratan Chandra Kar shared their experiences about their books.
