LGBT Supporters Accusation #6 How can you claim to be morally (or Scripturally) consistent when you observe some Old Testament laws and ignore others? This is a question that is not only asked by LGBT supporters, but by every first year Bible College student who is sincerely wrestling with the Scriptures. This is what scholars call the Discontinuity/Continuity issues of the Bible -or- what carries through the Old Testament into the New Testament? It is a lengthy, multi-week discussion that usually occurs in hermeneutics class (How to interpret Scripture?). LGBT supporters love to rapid fire questions at Christians concerning aspects of the Levitical Law. Why do you pick and choose certain verses to adhere to while leaving others out? There is a certain smugness and intellectual elitism as they cut and paste their Google findings. What they dont realize in their smugness is how intellectually ignorant they are really looking. When it comes to answering these questions there are several things that an honest interpreter has to consider: (These are just a few) 1. Is this law ceremonial, religious, civil, covenantal, dietary, etc.? Were these addressed by Jesus or under New Testament revelation? 2. Were the repercussions of a law changed or modified under New Testament revelation? (Example: Prophets are no longer stoned for inaccuracy, but rather their word is judged and their spirit subject to other prophets.) 3. Did the law become moot or pass away because it was fulfilled another way? (Example: We need no High Priest or sacrificial system because Jesus and the Cross fulfilled these aspects of the law.) 4. Is this law now considered a shadow or type of something found in Christ? (Example: The Sabbath Rest) For an LGBT supporter to quote an isolated Old Testament verse and pull it out of its context or understanding with New Testament revelation is something a elementary Sunday School child might do, but not a serious student of the Scripture.
