LIARS! LIARS! LIARS! A clergyman was walking down the street when he came upon a group of about a dozen boys, all of them between 10 and 12 years of age. The group was surrounding a dog and the he was concerned that the boys were hurting the dog, so he went over and asked What are you doing with that dog? One of the boys replied, This dog is just an old neighborhood stray. We all want him, but only one of us can take him home. So weve decided that whichever one of us can tell the biggest lie will get to keep the dog. Of course, the reverend was taken aback. You boys shouldnt be having a contest telling lies! he exclaimed. He then launched into a ten minute sermon against lying, beginning, Dont you boys know its a sin to lie, and ending with, Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie. There was dead silence for about a minute. Just as the reverend was beginning to think hed gotten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh and said, All right, give him the dog. Would you tell your utmost secret to someone who is dishonest? Would you buy an expensive jewelry from someone who has a reputation of dishonesty? Your answer is as good as mine. Honesty, is such a lonely word, everyone can be so untrue. (Sorry, just got carried away by Billy Joel) Honesty can be a rare commodity nowadays. It is very difficult to entrust others if there are people who accept lying as a norm. If people knew that lying is not right and good, how come some people still lie? Allow me to give you three reasons why do people lie? FEAR Liars have the fear of failure or what other people might say. Since they cannot fulfill or live up to others people expectation. Rather than showing their weakness, they tried to hide or cover it up their mistakes with another lie. CONVENIENT Rather than swallowing the bitter pill of telling the truth. They take the easy way out of telling a lie. It is much easier to tell a lie than to tell the truth. SELFISHNESS Liars often think about themselves, they do not even think that when they lie, that they can hurt others and even themselves. They do not think about the long-term consequences. But if we want to become successful in life, we got to develop our integrity, we cannot have a real integrity if we are not honest even with ourselves. Even if we try to hide our flaw people will eventually find out. There is not point in hiding, because sooner or later, the truth will soon come out. We need to make every effort to tell the truth, so we do not need to memorize the lie we said yesterday. HOW TO BE HONEST AT ALL TIMES? ADMIT Admitting that you are wrong is one of the hardest thing to do. Some people will even hide, defend and lie about their wrong doings, just to be able to get out of the situation. But if you are honest enough to admit your weaknesses and mistakes. People will appreciate you for your honesty and integrity. Another benefit is once you admit it, the truth can set you free. Set you free from guilt, shame and pain. The first step to restore trust, is ADMISSION. APOLOGIZE The three hardest words to say is, “I am sorry.” Saying sorry will not make you less of a person, but it will add value if you learn how to humble yourself to admit, that you are wrong and willing to learn from your mistakes. ACCEPT Learn how to accept the consequence of your mistakes. Take full responsibility and never pass the blame to others. You are not in a good position to demand or even negotiate under your terms or conditions. Accepting whatever consequences it might bring is one of the best ways to prove that you are sorry for the wrong things you’ve done. THINK. REFLECT. APPLY. Have you been faithful to your spouse and to your family? Are you struggling with any form of addiction? How is your financial situation? Do you have any debts? Did you just lie while answering these questions? BE HONEST EVEN IF OTHERS ARE NOT.
