LIBERIAN WAR ACTOR TURNS EUROPEAN UNION TOP DIPLOMAT Liberia is Africa oldest republic, and suffered one of Africa worst civil wars in the 90s. It is a nonmember state of the European Union, but it is however, a signatory to the ACP & EPA European Union “partnership treaties.” The “European Union” is a political & economic institution of 28 member nations within the eurozone. It was established on November 1, 1993 with a global agenda to stirred peace, global stability, and stimulate the political & economic growth of member states. The institution is guarded by “Ordinary Legislative Procedure,” regulations, and other acts; applicable to the function of member states and in concomitant acknowledgement with European Union bilateral partners. The laws of the European Union strictly meets the standard of global human rights declaration. The implementations of these legislations & other acts have attracted nonmember states to seek a “Comprehensive Partnership Agreement” within the European Union. The institution has admitted more partners than the numbers of member states. In October 2014, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf appointed Isaac Nyenabo; a provincial senator & former ragtag rebel ranking leader to represent Liberia at the European Union. If admitted, Isaac Nyenabo will be the first “war crime” suspect to be shielded with “European Union diplomatic immunity.” Such action may most likely has the propensity to degrade Europe standing on the world stage; and the biggest political losers would be human rights advocates, & rights groups. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf knows that the appointment of a “war actor” to the European Union and other recognizable global institutions would be problematic and compound complex situation on the basis of those institutions standing on human rights. Her decision to appoint former LURD “secretary of war” (Isaac Nyenabo) has come under intense criticism. Developments from Washington has revealed the following as to why Isaac Nyenabo is likely to be rejected by the European Union Parliament: (a) In the United States, George Boley was arrested, detained, and deported for “extra-judiciary killing during the Liberian civil war. (b) In the state of Florida, Chuckie Taylor was arrested and sentenced to 99 years in prison for the crime he committed in Liberia. (c) Tom Woewiyu was arrested, detained and current under house arrest in Derby, Pennsylvania and awaiting trial for related war crimes committed in Liberia. (d) In Brussels, Belgium, Martina Johnson has been arrested and in detention; also awaiting trial for crime committed during the Liberian civil war. She is believed to have ordered the execution of the American Catholic Nuns in October 1992. (e) In London, Eugene Nagba was refused entry into the United Kingdom and deported to Liberia for charges related to war crimes In summary, European Union Lawmakers shouldn’t make the slightest mistake to approve Isaac Nyenabo for Liberia ambassadorship to the European Union; if they do, the chances of “Prince Johnson,” another war actor, becoming Liberia Ambassador to the United Nations on human rights panel is greater than ever before. Liberians quest for war crime tribunal must be granted now before “war memory trace” gradually fade away.
