LIFESAVING COMMENDATION-OFFICER DAVID HERSHISER AND OFFICER WILL SMITH October 24, 2013 Officers David Hershiser and Willard Smith responded to the Prince St. Garage, 111 N. Prince St., Lancaster, PA for a possible suicidal male who was sitting on the edge of the top level of the garage with his legs dangling over. Contact was made and a dialogue was established. The male made statements of suicide and ending his life. After approximately 10 mins. officers were able to convince the male to come down off the ledge. When the male came down, he attempted to pull a knife from his coat pocket. Officers reacted quickly and were able to subdue the male and safely put him in custody. It was learned that the male’s intent was to use the knife to force the police to shoot him. The officers’ ability to establish a dialogue and react quickly undoubtedly saved this individual from harming or killing himself or others and should be commended for their life saving actions, which brought credit to themselves, the City of Lancaster, the Bureau of Police and the entire community of first responders.
