LISTEN | AFL Director of Umpiring Wayne Campbell says a free kick - TopicsExpress

LISTEN | AFL Director of Umpiring Wayne Campbell says a free kick should have been paid against Angus Monfries for incorrect disposal, but believes the decision was marginal. Speaking to The Run Home, Campbell believes the decision wasnt as cut and dry as some footy followers might think. We certainly think it was illegal disposal - we thought he had prior opportunity, Campbell said. Prior opportunity is having a reasonable amount of time, thats what the law book says. The guidelines behind that are a reasonable amount of time. If a player is balanced its around four steps - we think he took about five. On the balance of all that we believe he probably had prior opportunity and therefore it was illegal disposal. Campbell says the umpire didnt pay the free kick on the night because he thought he didnt have prior opportunity and Monfries attempted to kick the ball. Its certainly not as cut and dry as what the general public think, Campbell said. We would concede it was an error, but we thought it was marginal and we certainly wont be hanging the umpire on it. Campbell also stood by the decision of the Goal Review System in taking a goal off Mitch Wallis in the Bulldogs loss to Geelong. Listen to Campbell speak to The Run Home here:
