LIVE FULLY, DIE EMPTY! PART 2 2Kings13:21 and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet. A Christian banker, known for her hard-work at her workplace had an encounter with an Adviser to the President during his visit to the bank. The Adviser commended her efforts and remarked that he took special notice of her work attitude and that such people are needed to build the country. He promised to nominate her for a ministerial post in the government. The woman immediately rejected the offer; she said she will miss heaven, if she becomes a minister. Years before this event, another woman, a Christian, was nominated by an adviser to the President for the post of a director general of a parastatal,, based on her faithfulness in retiring funds back to the government when others made away with theirs. She accepted and caused a revolution in the food and drug administration sector of the country. She was later made a minister, She won many international awards and was known for her integrity and transparency. She was indeed a light and her work still speaks for her till date. We may argue about the first woman’s reaction but let us examine the forces at work and learn from them. Examine Agur’s prayer in proverbs: Proverbs 30:7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Proverbs 30:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Proverbs 30:9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. Two things are at work here, the fear of failure and the fear of success; we have previously examined the fear of failure. He does not want to be poor so that he would not steal yet he does not want to be rich so as not to take God’s name in vain. He prefers a middle ground. (3) Fear of Success. Our fear of success is also learned and may come from conditioning and observation too. Most people want to succeed and will go the extra length to succeed. Success is like a prescription drug, it has its side effects. The fear of success is actually the fear of the by-products or side-effects of success. The fear of success may come cloaked in good intentions, some are afraid that if they deploy their potentials they may actually succeed. Success has its challenges which they may feel is too hot to handle. Some believe that success will make them lonely and isolated, exposed to envy and attack. Some feel unworthy of success. Some are afraid of disappointments which may be attached to high expectations. Some are failing in their responsibility. The list is endless. Have you ever started some things and you have to abandon it half way because you feel that after you might have completed it may no longer be worthwhile? Do you have so many things uncompleted? Examine the critically why you are putting those things on hold. (4) Confront your fears. Success places a demand on people. Ask yourself, what will happen if you succeed? Take a mental tour, see the side-effects and proffer solutions to them. See yourself as deserving to be successful in the deployment of your potential, see lives becoming better by the deployment of your potentials, and see it bringing joy and happiness into people’s life.
