LOOKING AT THE HYMN IN THE ‘HISTORIES OF WALES’ Wales - ‘the Land of Song’ - is famous for its choirs and hymn-singing. For centuries hymns have played an important role in Welsh life, and Welsh hymn-tunes are popular all over the world. The hymn is the subject of the second programme in a new series of BBC Radio Wales’ Histories of Wales, in which historians explore themes that have shaped the country. The programme is available here for a few more days: bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03jp3jq/Histories_of_Wales_Series_2_The_Welsh_Hymn/ The programme looks at the hymn’s development and its significance in Welsh culture and as a badge of Welsh identity. The programme is written and presented by Professor E. Wyn James of the School of Welsh at Cardiff University, with contributions by leading authorities on religion, music and society in Wales. Professor James is an acknowledged expert on the hymn. He is a Fellow of the Welsh Hymn Society, and has written books and numerous articles on the subject. He is also editor of a much-acclaimed website dedicated to the study of Ann Griffiths, one of the most prominent of all Welsh hymn-writers.
