LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago. You have made the city a heap of rubble, the fortified town a ruin, the foreigners’ stronghold a city no more; it will never be rebuilt. Therefore strong peoples will honor you; cities of ruthless nations will revere you. You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall and like the heat of the desert. You silence the uproar of foreigners; as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is stilled. Isaiah 25:1-5 (NIV) City is symbolic language for urban life. It should not be identified with one particular city, ancient or future. “I” is not Isaiah, but all those who God has redeemed, especially those of the final apocalyptic scene. Isaiah is giving praise to Jehovah for His faithfulness to His people. He foretells the destruction of Israel’s enemies and their acknowledgement of Jehovah God; His protection of His waiting people. This will be a chapter of praise which will be sung by God’s righteousness throughout history, regardless of the judgment. Yes, Isaiah honored and praised God because Isaiah realizes that God completes his plans as promised. God also fulfills His promises to you. Just think how many of the prayers He has answered, and praise Him for His goodness and faithfulness. The poor suffered because of ruthless people oppressing them. However, God is concerned for the poor and He is a refuge for them. When we are disadvantaged or oppressed, we can turn to God for comfort and help. Jesus states that the kingdom of God belongs to the poor. Luke 6:20: “Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”
