LOSS OF GE AND 88 JOBS: This is a sad turn of events, especially for those who will be losing jobs. But this shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone as GE has been slowly leaving the area for at leeeeeeast the past decade. From a fiscal perspective, GE’s decision makes a lot of sense. They have a manufacturing campus in Fort Wayne that doesn’t manufacture goods (and hasn’t for quite some time). In 2009, GE took a pretty strong hit, like many companies have as a result of the “Great Recession.” Unlike most other companies though, GE has a clear and pretty simple plan for its own revitalization – get rid of non- or minimum- producing assets (i.e. Fort Wayne campus), consolidate its manufacturing operations (i.e. Mexico), and reduce its liabilities (i.e. downsize human resources). As any realtor will tell you, you’ve got to sell when the selling is good and with real estate its all about location, location, location. Given the current “economic development” climate in and near Downtown Fort Wayne and the GE’s campus’ close proximity to that location, it would make sense for GE to leave and probably enter into behind-the-scenes negotiations with the City/Karl Bandemer, its departments/agencies/ Karl Bandemer, or the Downtown Development Trust/ Karl Bandemer, Downtown Improvement District d/b/a Downtown Development Trust/ Karl Bandemer or any other member of the Legacy Trust Task Force/ Karl Bandemer. fortwayne/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140128/NEWS/320147612/0/SEARCH
