LRO, lets continue having the safest rides possible! Below you will find outlined, some common sense rules to apply as we ride. 1. Be Predictable- This is the most important rule. That means staying in the correct lane , stopping together, and starting together as traffic allows. Ride responsibly! Especially as a group! 2. Don’t Overlap Wheels-Doing so will get you in trouble fast! It often occurs from lack of concentration and some are just inexperienced, but sooner or later you will crash…… 3. Be Steady-It means maintaining steady pressure on the pedals. Don’t brake suddenly! Sudden braking can take out the entire group if you’re riding in a pace line. and make you unpopular real fast! 4. Announce Hazards-When you are leading the pack, you are responsible for the safety of everyone behind you. You need to be vocal when approaching intersections, walkers & runners. When slowing, stopping, turning, or coming in contact with potholes, rocks, sand & glass etc. Sudden unannounced actions will cause wrecks or major injuries. If you are in the rear of the pack, it’s extremely important to announce from the back any approaching motorists or cyclists. In either case the information should be relayed verbally by each rider in the peleton. 5. Signaling-Signaling lets everyone (vehicles & riders) know your intentions. This action makes you predictable! When slowing or stopping, place your flat hand behind your back to alert others of your intentions. A finger pointing at the road for any of the aforementioned in #4, such as glass, sand potholes, manhole covers etc. If you are the ride leader and pulling out of the paceline, a simple flick of the right elbow indicates your are rotating to the rear or a tap of the right buttock. In either case you should point in the direction you are headed. In most cases this will be to the left. 6. Don’t Fixate-Don’t stare at the wheel in front of you. Eventually you will hit it! Avoid keeping your eyes on the pavement. Keep your eyes up at all times so you can see what is happening up ahead, such as hand signals or oncoming traffic.
