LUGUS: Lugus is the name of a Celtic god attested in Spain and Gaul. Lugus also corresponds exactly to the inherited proto-Celtic form which became Old Irish Lug (modern Lugh), the name of the most centrally important figure of the Tuath Dé in the Mythological Cycle and also the most important supernatural being in the heroic biography of Cú Chulainn in the Ulster Cycle. Lugus is also the exact cognate of Welsh Lleu in the Mabinogi and the first element of Llefelys. For the evidence of an inherited Celtic myth of Lugus recoverable by comparison of early Irish and Welsh tales see Lug, Lleu, Llefelys, Cath Maige Tuired, Nodons. For two important Continental Celtic inscriptions which name Lugus, see Peñalba de Villastar and Chamalières.(...): Celtic culture: a historical encyclopedia, John Koch: books.google.es/books?id=f899xH_quaMC&pg=PA1203&lpg=PA1203&dq=john+koch+celtic+lugus+peñalba+de+villastar&source=bl&ots=p-_zffCw_E&sig=SJ-qOhfufBQYrx038QtrUldDwKE&hl=es&sa=X&ei=dS4wU6PwOeGN0AXz8oHIBQ&ved=0CEEQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=john%20koch%20celtic%20lugus%20peñalba%20de%20villastar&f=false At the site of Peñalba de Villastar, a number of texts in Roman characters were discovered engraved on the rock face of a mountain. A lengthy inscription of nineteen words appears to be directed to the Celtic god Lugus. It has most recently been studied by Prósper (2002) and Jordán Cólera (2005). A number of shortish graffiti were also found at the site, some of which are Latin in language (including a quotation of ll. 268–9 from Book II of Virgil’s Aeneid). They typically comprise personal names, though we do find at least one individual designated by the title VIROS VERAMOS ‘highest man’ (MLH K.3.18); perhaps it is the name of a political office.(...): The Celtic Languages, edited by Dr Martin J.
