Lagos to sue tax defaulters Lagos State Government has said it will henceforth prosecute corporate organisations and individuals that default in the payment of their taxes. The Chairman, Lagos State Internal Revenue Services, Mr. Tunde Fowler, added on Sunday that no fewer than 50 firms had been taken to courts for evading tax payment in the state. He said LIRS was currently conducting tax audit on many multinational and local companies to establish their tax liability, with a view to taking approriate action against them. Fowler said the tax audit showed that some companies were not fully remitting taxes of their employees to the government. He said a company in the state remitted N212m to the government in 2013, instead of N988m it deducted from its employees. He said, “LIRS has begun investigation into the company. We have asked the management to give certain information including their monthly immigration reports which every company which has expatriates must provide. “When the company did not provide the information, we wrote to inform them that we will proceed on legal action. “You may ask us how we got the N988m figure. We have what we call industry average rate. Base on the expatriates that they said they have here, they have 901 expatriate and we looked at the industry that they are in; we take an average pay of what those staff earn in other companies.” Fowler explained that, LIRS was verifying the basis of the firm’s objection, adding that the government, if not satisfied with records provided by the company, might be forced to court to get the power to shut the company. The LIRS boss said the organised private sector in the folds of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Employers Consultative Association were over 95 per cent tax complaint. He added that the government had challenges collecting tax from the non organised and informal sub-sectors of the economy. Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved.
