Lailat-ul-Qadr and the Quran PROF B A Butt The search for Lailat-ul-qadr in the five odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan has already begun. This night which is greater in value than a thousand months, affords us an opportunity to seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness which is always available to a contrite and sincere heart. This is also an appropriate time for introspection and self- assessment. What gives to this night its unparalleled greatness is the fact that the Quran was revealed during this night. After the revelation of this last book of Allah’s guidance, the destiny of every individual and that of the human race has been irrevocably connected with it. As the Prophet (SAW) remarks: “Verily Allah raises and uplifts some nations by (commitment to) this book and brings down others by (their neglect of) it.” (Muslim) What is the nature of our relationship with the book? How far have we understood it, assimilated its spirit and implemented its teachings? The sad and miserable plight in which we, the so-called believers in the Quran, find ourselves today as individuals and as an ummah, consisting of so many countries, supplies the grim answer. We have deviated from the teachings of the book in our individual lives and in our collective life with the result that we have fallen into misery and disarray. Iqbal had warned us: Khawr az mahjoori-e Quran shudi Shikwah-sanj-e gardish-e dauran shudi You are abjectly helpless and wretched because of your abandonment of the Quran, While you wail and complain of the hostile turn of times. God forbid our plight may be worse in the life to come. The Prophet tells us that “the Quran is an argument and a plea either for you or against you.” Where have we enlisted ourselves – among those whom the Quran will defend or amongst those whom it will prosecute. On the day of judgement when we shall be in the dock where will Quran stand in relation to us – as our defence or as our prosecution? Woe to us if it so happen that, the Prophet will say, my Lord these people of mine deserted this Quran.....................PROF B A Butt......
