As time went by my worry lessened and my curiosity took hold…. What things can I do for her to make life more interesting and more beautiful? Surely staring into space and crying is not all there is to life for a little miracle? Now that I have had my own experience (with a baby, well Laine, my baby); I know not to expect interaction from a newborn. But this does not mean that playing is not important. From day one your baby is curious about the world around him or her. Inside there beautiful little head there is a lot of connections being made and the information coming in is being sorted and categorized. Playing games helps them put their rubix cube in order or the pieces of the life puzzle together. As your baby grows and develops play time is crucial for their development socially, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, physically and cognitively. Not only the development of these skills but it also brings you closer to you baby and makes things much more enjoyable when your baby laughs instead of cries. Notes for baby entertainers: Repetition is important…most games won’t be a success the first time, but if you keep up your efforts your baby will eventually start loving it. Your babies attention span will vary depending on age, temperament and mood. Sometimes they will love a game for as long as 20 minutes other times you may need to modify the game to 5 minute intervals. Some babies are easily overstimulated. If they start to cry during play time do not despair. Switch to a calmer activity like cuddling and picture books. Keep in mind not all babies love every game that is supposedly suitable for their age range. Do not get worried if their skill levels are not measuring up, in other ways they may well be more advanced. Lastly enjoy the ride or the new gift of life. Not only will your baby be learning and growing so will you as a parent and an individual :)
