Lake County Board Takes Steps to Allow Beekeeping and Hens in Unincorporated Areas The proposed regulations would establish maintenance standards for keeping bees, chickens, and hoophouses. It would allow: • Two beehives on residential lots at least ¼ acre in area, and one additional beehive for each extra 10,000 square feet of lot area. • No more than six hens to be kept on residential lots at least ¼ acre in area. • Hoophouses, 50 square feet in size for each 10,000 square feet of residential lot area. The proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance are first considered by the Regional Planning Commission, then the Zoning Board of Appeals conducts the public hearing to record testimony and public comments. The County Board makes the final decision, which is expected in November.
