Lake Okeechobee still polluting the St. Lucie River POSTED by Sylvie McCarthy MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. -- The waters in Lake Okeechobee are still rising and so the dumping of billions of gallons of fresh dirty water into the Port St Lucie River is continuing. The Army Corps of Engineers says this dumping is necessary to secure dikes on the lake. However, the residents of Martin County are not satisfied with this reasoning. The St Lucie River is now contaminated from the polluted water being dumped into it and the health department has told residents not to have any contact with the water. Army Corps Colonel Alan Dodd says, Although we continue to release water, we are sensitive to the environmental impacts. The corps will continue to explore every available option toward finding solutions that strike the right balance for the concerns of all stakeholders. Together Martin County residents raised $75 million to start a building project which includes storage ponds to filter and clean water along the Okeechobee waterway. Residents are now calling for federal funding and asking the Army Corps to show them some committment. Lake Okeechobee still polluting the St. Lucie River
