Lamar cross country team captures three straight conference championships The Lamar cross country team captured its’ third straight Big 8 conference championship on Saturday, Oct. 19. The race was held in the afternoon at East Newton High School. The girls started the competition with Kaelyn Sturgell taking an easy third place finish with a time of 20:45 for first team all-conference honors. Josie Kaderly, running in her first race of the season, placed 23rd with a 26:26. Harley Hunt ran a 30:07 for 26th and Ida Aslanishuili ran 35:21 for 28th. Carl Junction took the girls’ team championship. Kaden Overstreet led the Tiger boys with a first place finish to become the individual champion with a time of 16:21. Zane Hull placed third with a 16:51 and Nicholas Ray finished fifth with a 17:19 for first team all-conference honors. Peyton Bailey received second-team all-conference honors with a ninth place finish and a time of 17:49. Jasper Messner was the fifth varsity runner to cross the line with a 17th place finish in a time of 18:57 completing the team scoring. Other finishers for Lamar were Jesse Compton 18th, Chase Moore 19th, Kevin Clements 38th, Kip Roland 42nd, Grant Smith 43rd, Christian McCarthy 48th and Tanner Darrow 50th. Lamar finished with 35 points for its third straight team championship, 30 points lower than the nearest competition. A bigger test will come next year when the team goes for its fourth title and McDonald County powerhouse joins the Big 8 conference.
