Lance Parkin has released transcripts of a long interview with Alan Moore conducted for the bio hes been working on. Its fascinating stuff, as youd expect. But curious in places, too. lanceparkin.wordpress. At one point, Parkin asks Moore about his relationships at DC, and Moore references a comment Paul Levitz allegedly made to him - you are the biggest mistake I ever made. Moore tries to explain this statement, which is pretty baffling whichever way you look at it, and comes to the following tentative conclusion. This is only a guess, but I think they perhaps thought ‘yes, he’s selling a lot of copies, we’ll take advantage of this, but this person has too much talent to fit within the confines of the medium as it exists at the moment’... Perhaps Paul Levitz was having a prescient moment, that he saw that the comics industry would have to change so radically to contain people like me and that wasn’t going to happen before I had kicked down the fence. Like all mainstream comic book writers of my generation, I worked within an industry that had been changed in some pretty profound ways by Moores writing, which I admire very much. But I still find that paragraph hard to read.
