Lancs slip to second T20 defeat Peter Moores felt Lancashire were in the region of 10 runs light with the bat as the Lightning lost their second Friends Life t20 clash in two nights against Derbyshire at the County Ground on Tuesday night. The visitors failed to defend their 151-8 after losing the toss, and were undone by former Lancashire overseas player Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The West Indian anchored his side’s chase with 87 not out off 70 balls as a seven-wicket win was secured with three balls to spare. Chanderpaul, who spent a short spell at Emirates Old Trafford in 2010 without playing Twenty20, also equalled his career best score as the Lightning failed to bounce back from Monday’s defeat against Notts Outlaws. “We knew the score we got was tight,” said Moores. “We’d have liked to have got 160, which we thought was par because it did a bit early on. “Credit to them for getting early wickets, but I thought we fought back well and kept positive all the way through. We got a couple of wickets up front, but we’ve just got to accept that Shiv played really well. “We beat his stumps either side and got a couple close to hand, but we couldn’t get him (Chanderpaul) out. He played very well. “It went both ways. When we went off for rain, they were just ahead. Tom Smith then bowled beautifully to get us right back in it, but then they had a big over off Steve Parry. By the time the game finished, they were on top. Both sides went at it hell for leather.” Karl Brown’s third fifty in this format was not enough. He hit 50 off 39 balls to top-score after the Lightning had been reduced to 19-3 in the fifth over and 48-4 after seven. Brown came to the crease at the fall of the third wicket and hit a four and three sixes, sharing 68 in 9.1 overs for the fifth wicket with Tom Smith, who a run-a-ball 27. Lancashire now head into Friday’s clash with Yorkshire at Headingley desperately needing a win having lost two of their first three matches. After Lancashire lost the toss, Stephen Moore, Steven Croft and Ashwell Prince all fell cheaply to Tim Groenewald, with Moore and Croft going to top-edged pulls. Groenewald finished with 4-21 from four overs. Simon Katich got Lancashire going with a breezy 28 off 20 balls, including three fours and a six off left-arm seamer Mark Footitt in the sixth over. The Australian has started this competition well with 43 not out and 48 in the first two North Division matches. Brown holed out to long-on off Wes Durston at the start of the 18th over trying to hit his fourth six, while Gareth Cross added 24 not out off 14 balls. The Lightning then made the perfect start to their defence of 152 when Kabir Ali had Chesney Hughes caught at first slip by Smith with the first ball of the innings. Glen Chapple also forced Durston to chop on to leave the score at 50-2 after six overs. After brief rain delay in the 13th over broke Derbyshire’s momentum, as did an excellent spell from Smith (1-17). But Chanderpaul tipped the contest his side’s way with two fours and a six off Stephen Parry in the 16th over when 52 off the last five were needed. He shared in stands of 46 and an unbroken 58 for the third and fourth wickets with captain Wayne Madsen and South African overseas star Albie Morkel. Yorkshire have lost their first two North Division matches heading into Friday, making it a crunch clash if there ever was one.
