Larry was supposed to be a cat. I had been taking care of a friends cat while they got settled and Rita had become quite close to this cat. When my friend picked up her cat Rita seemed down so we headed to the SPCA in Dallas to get her a new feline friend. As I was passing the puppies I saw a pen full of Catahoulas. I love those doggies. One looked right at me. Our eyes locked and I picked him up. He immediately snuggled under my chin with his head and that was that. He was mine. The SPCA names all their pets and his tag said Larry. I kept it and it fit him perfectly. He and Rita became inseparable. Best friends. Larry was the consummate keeper of the house and would bark his alarm if he heard anything. A very protective dog but also a cuddle bug. He loved to sleep in my bed and always thought he was a lap dog. Also affectionate. We shared a secret touch of of our foreheads to each other and he would make a little snort. We were very, very close. After Rita left us two years ago he never seemed the same. He lost his sister and you could tell he missed her greatly. They were both amazing camping and hiking dogs. They never needed leashes and would circle the campsite all day and night. Larry would scratch on the tent door to go to sleep. He loved the outdoors and car rides and chasing birds! You couldnt say the word bird without him bolting out the door! He was a funny fellow. A few days ago he became lethargic and was having a difficult time getting up from his doggy bed. We thought it was from the plum seeds he eats from the backyard. The vet said it was actually a massive, cancerous tumor in his spleen and he was clinically unstable at that time. No surgery would help either and he had only a few days to live. The decision to let him go was one of the hardest I have had to make. I was with him through the entire process, our foreheads touching, looking into each others eyes and I held him in my arms as he went to sleep. Rob and King came to say goodbye too. I cannot stop crying and I miss him terribly. He was the best friend, pet, companion I could have ever asked for. He will be missed forever and ever. Larrys ashes will be spread under the Apple Orchards in Sultan where Ritas ashes are also spread. Maybe they will be close to each other again.
