Las Tejedoras Guild Meeting Tuesday, October 1, 2013, 9:30a Westminster Presbyterian Church, Santa Fe Program by Maggy Pavlou “Felt,” Traditional and Contemporary Maggy Pavlou will present “Felt”, Traditional and Contemporary at the October meeting. Her program will include a short historical review of both methods, their application, and focusing on wearables. The emphasis will be on contem- porary felt making, its roots and 35-year history in North America, and the entry of this medium into the fine crafts. A discussion will focus briefly on various felt techniques including wool roving felt, knitted wool felt, NUNO felt, laminated felt, silk and cellulose felt, three-dimensional felt and industrial felt. Each will be demonstrated with felt fabric swatches and photos of completed garments. A native of Austria, Maggy’s interest in fiber arts started as a young girl in grade school. She learned to knit mittens and hats, embroider and sew at a young age. After she came to the United States, she learned to quilt. About six years ago she started felting. “The turning point in my career was a workshop I attended, conducted by the Santa Fe Weaving Gallery in 2006,” Maggy said. “At the workshop I actually took classes in spontaneous design. But I was wearing my first felted garment and was asked who made it. Wearing my own work resulted in an invitation to show my work at this well-known gallery in Santa Fe. It was during that work- shop that my fiber arts career in felting was launched.” Maggy Pavlou has been featured in the cover article of the Jan/Feb 2009 Fiberarts magazine. Her work is shown at various shows and galleries including Santa Fe Weaving Gallery.
