Last Saturday a little girl got lost at a big shopping mall in LA. Fortunately her parents were found pretty soon, but that reminded me of a subway story. It was also around Christmas time several years ago, and the train car was packed. At one of the stations a crowd of people ran out, and somehow took a little girl out with them. Her Mom turned away for a moment, and when she looked for the kid, the doors were already closing. The woman seemed panicky, and asked the girl to stay put with hand gestures. Then the train left. I was keeping an eye on the girl, and wanted to talk to her. She seemed calm and collected though, as if she were well prepared for such things. She found a woman with two children in tow at the station, came up to them, and politely said. Hi, I am Monica, can I wait with you, until Mom comes back? The woman was sympathetic and missed the next train for her, and so did I, just in case. The girl was chatting with the lady and her kids, and wasnt nervous at all. The mother reappeared ten minutes later. She had apparently been crying, and covered the child with hugs and kisses, while thanking the other lady. Please, be careful next time, said the latter. Your kid is amazing, only 6 and not panicking at all. I work in law enforcement though. You know what I would have had to do, if you hadnt shown up soon enough... The mother flinched, awkwardly thanked the woman again, grabbed the girls hand, and they hurried to the other end of the station.
