Last Saturday was a day Ill live to wish away from my memory for a long time to come. F, a quiet Iranian American woman whose eyes deceptively twinkled with youthful innocence, had committed a brutal suicide days earlier, and was being buried before my eyes. There were endless tears and unforgettable howls from the crowd. The culprit was, indeed, chronic depression. But upon the greater backdrop, I cant help noticing that secular Iranians have lost their moral compass. A sweeping statement, I know. But I believe it to be at the heart of the malaise permeating a community that 40 years ago owned the most robust student opposition movement in the history of the US. Our great political tragedy in the aftermath of the 1979 revolution has led to a moral dissolution of sorts in our community. Lost, we go on detonating our lives and giving up our loves.
