Last Saturday was the anniversary of The Battle for Sullivan’s Island. It took place on June 28, 1776 between the patriots and a British naval squadron and landing force. The hurriedly built fort intended to protect the patriots was actually made from palmetto logs under the command of Charleston native, Colonel William Moultrie. The British began to fire around 11:30 in the morning; the bombardment was described as an “eternal sheet of flame.” Amazingly, and at to the British’s shock, the spongy palmetto ramparts absorbed the hits of the firing from the British bomb ketch Thunder. This was the first significant rebel victory of the Revolutionary War. So if you were soaking up the sun on Sullivan’s last weekend, 238 years ago these men were fighting for it. Come by the museum to read and hear about this story! **Also, note the flag. Dont forget we have an exhibit dedicated to them right now!**
