Last Wednesday night, Sept. 17, was an exciting and surprising evening. Al has worked for the Kearney Housing Agency going on 20 years this November. The professional organization for housing employees is called “The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials” or NAHRO. Each year the Nebraska Chapter of NAHRO has a conference that includes several training sessions to keep the housing authorities updated on new federal and state regulations and policies. As part of this conference they have a banquet to give out awards to recognize outstanding people, housing authorities and programs. This year Al was awarded the “Maintenance Person of the Year 2014.” The Kearney Housing staff worked very, very hard to keep this a surprise for Al until the banquet. It took some pretty fancy ground work, not only to get Al there, but to also include the family. My sister, Glory, and I had Al thinking she and I were headed to the casino boats in Iowa. Our daughter, Stephanie, and her husband, Roger, flew into Omaha from Colorado Springs Wednesday morning to be at the banquet. They then had to fly back out to home on Thursday. With the banquet being in the middle of the week, it wasn’t possible for the other kids to be there. However, Roger and Steph made sure they were all present with us. They enlarged pictures of each sibling, spouse, and kids. Taped them with duct tape to a paint stick! Thus, the family photo with everyone there! It was so much fun because Al was truly surprised. It required some tricky moves on all of our parts, because you that know Al, he’s like a “fart in a skillet” when trying to keep him in one place!!!! He can disappear so fast!
