Last Wednesday night my eldest son and I took my two daughters (15 and 7) to the East Coast of our island at 9pm - to walk on & around the huge expanse of exposed reef and tidal pools for 2 hours, it was the night of the Blood Moon, a few things stood out as not previously experienced by me ever before (did this about 40 times over the last few years)....never saw so many Octopi, or Eels, or brittle-stars....and all of these latter ones were upside down...as though they were feeding off the Moonlight (since their mouths are on their undersides - which was the side facing up this night)....only ever saw them right-side-up normally in all previous occasions.....the kids had great fun catching and releasing after examination - some of these (and many other) normally infrequently encountered denizens of the ocean, it is simple things like this that add cherished memories to ones childhood.....years from now they can tell their kids: when we were little our dad used to take us to the beach to walk the reef and tidal pools at low tide at night under the light of the Moon to see Octopus, Eels, fish and crustaceans, rescue baby sea turtles that hatched but were heading the wrong way - by taking them back to the sea, and watch mother turtles lay eggs ....cost me nothing as a parent, but gives them priceless memories and life lessons
