Last evening, my wife and I had the extreme pleasure of seeing the brilliant Elayne Boosler perform up here at Ventura Harbor Comedy Club as part of the Ventura Comedy Festival. Jamie Alcroft hosted and did a really fine job of it, garnering more than a few nice laughs for himself, and he introduced Murray Langston, Allan Havey, and Elayne. (Allan Stephan was also scheduled but had difficulties with a flight from Denver back to LA and, unfortunately for this audience, missed his set.) For the record, Alan Bursky was also on hand, but didnt perform. It was great to see Murray (with daughter Mary in tow), still full of great energy and silly jokes (giving the audience a retro-treat by making his entrance as The Unknown Comic) and Allan Havey, who is not only a terrific stand-up with great timing and presence, but simply excellent on Mad Men, imho, and they both pleased the audience immensely. However, it was the inimitable Ms. Boosler who sent the audience soaring into the comedy stratosphere. Trust me... if youre a Boosler fan, you were not disappointed. As I said to my wife at the end of the performance (and with no disrespect to the other performers), Now, THATS a stand-up comic. Truly an old-school pro. Elayne is, and has always been, one of the finest stand-up comics of our generation, male or female, and I believe the show business Gods got it terribly wrong when they didnt make her into a huge, HUGE star. Shes intelligent and informed, audiences relate to her, she writes great material and has PERFECT delivery. And shes been making us laugh for around 40 years. (Sorry to bring that up, young lady, but its the truth and should be noted; as its an accomplishment that few comedians can claim.) Thanks to you all for a great evening of laughter. Bravo.
