Last full day in the dominican republic today. Amazing experience yesterday. We climbed a mountain trail with an old woman and her husband who were showing us the land they had for sale. She said it was about a half an hour walk from her house so I thought wed be able to do it in twenty minutes as she wasnt the youngest of ladies. And especially as she was barefoot. Completely wrong, Isabelita had what I can only describe as the surefootedness of a mountain goat combined with the speed somewhat approaching that of a cheetah who hasnt eaten for days. It had been raining and the trail was seriously muddy. The first five minutes I attempted to avoid the muddy parts by walking on stepping stones but it became impossible and soon as was sliding all over the place. Papito, her cousin helped greatly and soon I found myself holding this mans hand all the way up the mountain or else I would have fallen on multiple occasions. Well, thats my excuse anyway! Eli was behind me and talking of behinds she was being pushed up the mountain by Isabelita who kept a firm hand on her bottom! The views were truly exceptional on the ascent and once we arrived we found a lush flat land miles away from anywhere where Isabelita had been born and raised as a child. Firstly we had to scare away the curious and unafraid bulls and cows and then we could start to notice the mangos, Guinea and mature coco trees. The descent was mainly in the dark as wed run out of sunlight which was challenging and the jungle was alight with fireflies illuminating the undergrowth like mini led flashlights and the rumbling of the thunderstorm provided almost constant lightning though it was thankfully fairly far away. Once back at the village we had our feet washed for us and the negotiations started by them telling us that a road was being built straight up to their land which was somewhat akin to their existing a dual carriageway up to the top of la concha mountain! All in all an amazing experience and the people who we are meeting and the friendships that are being formed have made this trip unforgettable. We havent purchased the land for the cacao plantation but I feel were getting closer.
