Last man hanging prayed to Jesus ByExpress News Service - PALANI 06th June 2013 10:47 AM While most devotees trapped inside the eight rope cars, struck midway in the Palani hill shrine due to a technical snag for nearly three hours on Wednesday morning, were panicky and screamed for help, 47-year old Raja hailing from Bodinayakanur in Theni managed to remain calm throughout. A devotee of the presiding deity Lord Muruga, Raja said he actually prayed to Lord Jesus to safeguard everyone. “It was no doubt a harrowing experience. I was on one of the cars with my wife and children. Usually we climb the stairs to reach the shrine but this time we chose to take a rope car ride at the insistence of my children. When the car stopped moving suddenly, people remained calm for about 10 minutes. Later, when there were no signs of movement, my daughter broke down. I could hear loud screams from the occupants of the other rope cars,” recalled Raja. The marketing executive, who has gone with friends to the famed Christian Velankanni shrine a few times, said “my mind automatically recalled Lord Jesus and I began praying to Him to safeguard everyone.” Raja calmed down his daughter and noticed that a North Indian family on the neighbouring rope car was unsettled by the development. “The woman in the family and her child were screaming loudly. A little while later, she was dumbstruck and numbed to the bone with fear. I kept telling them not to worry,” he said. Raja and his family members were the last to be rescued and brought down to safety.
