Last month I got the chance to train some Italian catchers. Only - TopicsExpress

Last month I got the chance to train some Italian catchers. Only having 6 days with them I really wanted to teach them my fundamentals as quickly & effectively as possible AND get them moving and feeling a little uncomfortable. This was day 2, and at this point I think they thought I was crazy. This is a BLOCKING CIRCUIT (only part of it is filmed). I call this drill zig zag blocking & it works on blocking inside & outside pitches. When Im on the dirt I use the chalk line. The chalk line represents the plate & when we block in & out pitches we strive to get our belly buttons to face them! One thing that NEVER gets enough credit but is SO important is a catchers squat. Ones squat should be athletic, comfortable and moveable. EVERYTHING WE DO AS A CATCHER IS FROM A SQUAT! We want to be fast & athletic from this position. Ex. Show me one catcher who looks athletic with their butt in the air & on their toes (you wont find one). GET COMFORTABLE! Get low, be a little wide, be able to EASILY move! This circuit mixed zig zag blocking & squat jumps! They rotated each section 3 times. In doing this I want my catchers to feel out their own mistakes. I yell key fundamental trigger words, but I want them to FEEL their bodies work through the drill. Theres no greater feeling than getting it. Thats what I want my catchers to feel! Now for the serious stuff, when am I going back to Italy??
