Last month, Subway sandwich lovers breathed a sigh of relief when the company decided to remove azodicarbonamide--a chemical found in yoga mats--from its sandwich bread. Though deemed safe by the World Health Organization, recent studies have linked it to asthma and other skin and respiratory problems. When baked, the chemical has also been shown to cause cancer in lab animals. The good news is that Subway is proactively taking the prudent step, without waiting for harder evidence or government mandate. The bad news? Azodicarbonamide is found in over 500 other popular stretchy food products like packaged bagels. Before you get too upset, there are lots of industrial chemicals in our food supply. The main ingredient in tofu, calcium sulfate, is also what they use to make sheet rock. Yum!
