Last month, our pilot project ‘SMS story’ caught the attention of audiences in both PNG and Australia, largely because of its promise of improvements to children’s reading ability. The trial has since caught the attention of the World Bank. Senior ICT and Education Specialist, Michael Trucano was recently in the country where he saw firsthand the exciting new innovation that used a simple text message based service to assist teachers introduce children to reading English. The trial saw a group of teachers in Madang and Simbu receive 200 text messages over 20 weeks containing stories they wrote on the blackboard and lesson plans. At the end of the trial, the reading ability of more than 1000 children was significantly higher than other elementary school children.
