Last night I found out that the single greatest leader that I have ever had the pleasure of serving under, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Charles Costanza embodies everything that a leader could possibly be. In fact, I dont think that the word even does him service. In a squadron of 500, there wasnt a single soldier that he didnt know on a personal level. On Christmas, he had all of the officers in the squadron pull guard duty at JSS Istiqlaal, so that the enlisted guys could enjoy the holiday. At the end of OIF 09-10, he went around and shared a personal moment with each and every soldier in the squadron when handing out the Garry Owen coin. He wasnt just Garry Owens leader in Iraq, but a deep personal friend to everyone in the squardon. I have never had a leader in the military or civilian world that cared as deeply and genuinely for those he was in charge of, as Colonel Costanza. Sir, I would like to not only wish you a speedy recovery, but also that your family continues to stay strong through this ordeal. I have no doubt that we will all be attending your kicked cancers butt party in a year. Seventh First!
