Last night I had a shopping experience at the most unlikely place. - TopicsExpress

Last night I had a shopping experience at the most unlikely place. Donald is an 82-year-old employee of Walmart. He mixed my paint for my China hutch. After a lively discussion about Glidden High Endurance vs. High Endurance Plus, I patiently waited as the colors dripped slowly into the can. Donald commented on the soothing hue I had chosen, Misty Aqua, and proceeded to tell me about the gentleman who revolutionized submarine interior decor. Apparently the bright colors originally inside subs were causing aggression among their crews and a simple color change fixed this. You see, Donald had met this man when Donald was a professor of chemical engineering at a university in Washington; and now here he was joyfully mixing my paint, explaining the difference between oil-based urethane and water-based polycrylic. I learned two important lessons from this humble gentleman as he shuffled around the desk to gently place my Misty Aqua High Endurance Plus in my cart: (1) people arent always what they seem, and (2) an oil-based urethane will lift the moisture from the paint underneath it and literally dissolve the paint. Thank you, Donald, for reminding me that our elderly population have lived productive lives with a rich history and stories that need to be heard. It wont be too long before I am Donald and I want to be treated with the same respect I am reminded to give now.
