Last night, I was flipping through random beach images on my Kindle and came across a poem I hadn’t read in some years: “When you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” Most might recognize that sentence as the last line in the old “Footprints in the Sand” poem. (look it up if you dont know what Im talking about) So as I’m reading, I feel this little nudge in my spirit that spoke with a very pronounced Paul Harvey-ish style delivery to introduce… ‘The Rest of the Story’ For a moment, I was whisked away to some faraway beach…not my choice of scenery by any means. Personally, I would have liked to have seen hundreds of cool crabs, some rickety old boat, a beached mermaid, and maybe a Megaladon shark fin pacing the distant waters, and… …SQUIRREL! “Pay attention,” He said, “Look. You see the two sets of footprints, right?” Yes, LORD, I’ve read this poem probably a THOUSAND times already…thousand and one if you count just now. “Okay, so you recognize the times I supposedly carried you, right?” Uhm, are you making ‘fat’ jokes now, LORD? Yes, I understand that part too. What are you getting at? “What if I told you those were still YOUR footprints?” (silence) (and suddenly curious where that squirrel disappeared to) “I AM in you, remember? The two sets of footprints represent our daily relationship, walking side by side, fellowshipping and just enjoying one another’s presence. I LOVE hanging out with you, ya know. But you tend to wander off sometimes when life starts getting squirrely – yes, that was intentional. Now pay attention. In those moments…in your weakness…I AM made strong. I come alive in you to get you through, spiritually carrying and guiding you back into My will and presence and back to where we can walk in fellowship once more. That single set of footprints is ME working through YOU, and YOU magnifying ME as a result.” I didn’t know what else to say…and gave up on the squirrel. Thank you, LORD!
