Last night I was watching such sad documentaries about survivers of the holocaust. It was a time relevant to my now belated Grandmother (not Jewish) who travelled through Europe through concentration camps to migrate to Australia pregnant with my mother when they were evacuated from Lithuania. Whilst she may have been in the good concentration camps (I use the term good loosely) where in exchange for food, they were brainwashed with religion. The effects of that was that was seen in the way my Grandmother feared if any of us were not religious. Hiters fear of Judaism was so great Christianity had to dominate. I think at one point in her life she was actually re- living those days to the point where it was real to her again as she actually went through a stage of calling me evil- because I wasnt Christened. She went through a stage of attempting to brainwash me including using tactics of guilt and emotional manipulation. My own Grandmother. However I understood in those camps they really were brainwashed in order to receive a bit of food after starving for days at a time if not longer. All whilst being pregnant with my mother. Existing in photographs with your family is therefore so important to me since of some family members, photos are all that I have. I saw the full effects of those camps and times in my Grandmother. In those moments I realised my Grandmother had been taken from me- her mind had been. As such, it is therefore unfair I never truly got to know or enjoy my Grandmother as her true self. She was very much a product of brainwashing. I now understand her attempts to brainwash me were out of a place of wanting to protect me- because it was sharing in those past beliefs of Christianity back in those days where you had a chance of survival.
