Last night, Prof SMN al-Attas once again started with the discussion on the Arabic language: Jahiliyyah vs Quranic. Quran did not make pre Islamic Arabic more mature because it was already so, but it gave birth to a new Arabic by giving new meanings to key terms and concepts projecting a new worldview, that of Islam. To him, language is v important because it is reflects and describes reality, and a means of communication of thought. Any confusion regarding a key term and concept will affect other terms and concepts which will project a different worldview. This confusion and error will manifest itself in various theoretical and practical fields such as religion, ethics, education, law, politics etc. He gave many examples of this confusion, one of which is the inaccurate Malay translation of some Quranic verses.... Last night i met many new friends, and of course some old ones whom i have not met for quite some time.
