Last night as I went to sleep I was flooded with memories of my best and oldest friend Barbara Norman. I never know what date it is, but when I checked the next day I realized yesterday was the 15th, the 9th anniversary of her going to be with Jesus. Its amazing how the body just knows the calendar of grief, without the head realizing it. I recalled a friendship of girlish laughter, crazy dancing to Elton John, more sleepovers than I can ever count, Sunday dinners with our families together, Laura Ashley infatuation, first-time pierced ears, late night talks and so much more. Barbaras laugh tinkled. She was the best audience to my funny stories and the most loyal friend one could have. Jesus put our lives together for more than a quarter of a century so we could cry, laugh and pray together through all the mountains and valleys in life. As she was dying, she gave her life one more time to Jesus, handing over to Him her burdens and receiving His unconditional love and forgiveness. It was a holy moment, Gods Spirit powerful in that room. I learned so much. About life. About death. I miss her so much. I am so sad she did not meet my children on this earth. Sad that I could not tell her that she was the original inspiration for adoption in my life, as an adopted child herself. But the good news is one day I will. We will be friends again. This time is a sad time, but my eyes are lifted to the hope we have in Jesus. This is for you Katie McElvain.
