Last night at Upland Council PTA, Dr. Kellys report included a very open discussion about the progress for restoring crossing guards. She fielded questions from the various PTA presidents. Here are a few highlights from her comments: 1) The $70,000 amount was based on restoring guards to roughly the 2009 levels. 2) The hope is to include volunteers, but dependability is a primary concern. 3) Questions came up about why certain campuses have teachers crossing kids, while others do not. She said that at some campuses, it is an adjunct duty, where at others it is voluntary (because their adjunct duty is spent elsewhere). She hopes to work toward more standardized experiences at every campus. 4) Ellen Lugo is the point person within the district going forward. 5) Drop off windows are under review. In particular this was discussed for Peppertree (20 min) and Valencia (15 min). 6) She feels the discussions with Rob Butler that began before the tragedy are positive and productive in many areas, including school zone concerns. 7) Each PTA president was invited to submit intersections of concern through Diane Tarpinian Hester, council president. Dr. Kelly will submit them for consideration in the process. 8) Guards should be in place 20-30 days from when the contract with All City is signed. All City handles guards for many cities. To anyone who was there, please feel free to add to my perceptions. I left feeling like we are in the home stretch of improvement.
