Last night before the sold-out crowd at the DGA Theater in Hollywood, the Academy took a deep dive into the innovative techniques behind Gravity (2013), winner of seven Oscars including Directing, Visual Effects, Film Editing and Cinematography. 70% of the finished film was comprised of a mere 17 shots, though those actually consisted of many different elements including mixtures of live action and animation, invisible edits, and other cinematic wizardry to create the illusion of seamless motion in space. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs introduced the host for the evening, Bill Kroyer, a co-chair of the Academy’s Science and Technology Council. The three guests for the evening included Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Tim Webber, Oscar-winning film editor Mark Sanger, and animation supervisor Max Solomon, all of whom worked with director Alfonso Cuarón on his previous film, Children of Men (2006) and originally expected the project to only take six weeks -- four and a half years later they had finally finished their groundbreaking film.
