Last night, in opting out of 6:30 uptown traffic, I decided to grab a bite in my old neighborhood on the UWS. I found a 7:00 spot on W 72nd, and headed off to a diner. When I returned, I noticed I was parked in by a couple of taxis. My was initial reaction was a self righteous, WTF!!!! (Though I had no further time constraints that evening.) Then I noticed, from WEA , to the Westside Highway , and in both directions on Riverside it was a sea of parked taxis. Then I remembered The Islamist Center on 72nd Riverside, and these drivers were doing their evening devotions. Not knowing where they were in their prayers I decided to go over and inquire. I walked up to the door, with bass guitar and gig bag, along with a plethora of projections as to how this was going play out, removed my shoes, and entered, I was approached by a gentleman and asked if he could be of service. I explained my situation and offered the number of the taxis. He apologized, and asked I could be patient for 5 more minutes because they were in mid prayer. I ( somewhat begrudgingly) agreed, and chose to wait outside. When they finished, I was approached by numerous gentlemen, not only offering apologies and thank yous for my patience, but also fresh fruit, water, a meal, all along with a mass search to find the drivers of the cabs..In fact the driver of cab G421, one of two who had parked me in, offered to take me where I needed to go. It was one of the most pleasant NY City inconveniences Ive ever experienced..,.
