Last night my family watched a nature show in which a trio of lion cubs was attempting to win over the affections of a male lion in lieu of being eaten. As the narrator explained the scenario my kids stared at the television, completely silent for the first time since 3:05pm. Wed had one of *those* afternoons, the kind where the minutes feel like hours and you absolutely consider devouring your children once you cross the threshold of public urination and having to bail from a business call because a kitten is meowing from inside a backpack. The children looked at me with wide, questioning eyes. I met their stares and lovingly reassured them cubs being eaten can happen any time, any where. Benny audibly gulped and Amelia gave a nervous laugh, not exactly sure how serious I was. They continued to be naughty right up to bedtime when Amelia was hiding under Bens bed and scared the bejesus out of him. Parenting is a no bullshitter. The hard days are not unique to a few of us, they happen to all of us. Luckily, they usually happen on different days so that when it isnt our day we can offer the other parent the supportive smile, silly quip, or even a helping hand as they share the struggle weve all had to just make it through the day. Weve all been there. When we observe someone else in that place, make a small gesture to ensure them they arent alone, they arent a terrible parent, youve been there, you get it. And the kids would probably taste too grimy and salty to be enjoyable anyway. brainchildmag/2014/10/to-the-furious-mom-in-the-target-parking-lot/
